Truck bed size chart

Inside measurements in inches, as each maker publishes them. Length is along the floor with the tailgate closed; volume is in cubic feet. A dash means the maker’s sheet doesn’t give that figure — it is left blank rather than guessed. The last column says whether a 4x8 sheet lies in the bed.

Why a “5.5 ft” bed isn’t 5.5 feet

Bed names are rounded labels, not measurements, and every maker rounds differently. Ford’s 5.5 ft F-150 bed is 67.1 in at the floor — 5 ft 7.1 in. Toyota’s 5.5 ft Tundra bed is 65.6 in. Chevrolet names its beds closer to the real length: the “5 ft 10 in” short box is 69.9 in. If something has to fit, use the length at the floor in the chart, not the name.

The floor length is measured with the tailgate closed, from the front wall of the bed to the inside of the tailgate. With the tailgate down, a load can rest on it and stick out past the end of the floor; the calculator shows how far.

The number that matters most: between the wheel wells

The wheel wells stick into the bed and narrow it. The gap between them decides whether 4 ft wide sheets — plywood, drywall, OSB — lie flat on the floor. Every full-size and heavy-duty pickup in the chart clears 48 in, from 48.7 in on the Tundra to 51.9 in on the GM heavy-duty standard bed. Most midsize trucks don’t: the Tacoma has 44.7 in, the Frontier 44.5 in and the Colorado and Canyon 45.5 in, so sheets ride on top of the wheel wells. The Ranger at 48.2 in and the Ridgeline at 50.0 in are the midsize exceptions.

A 4x8 sheet lies flat with the tailgate closed only in an 8 ft bed: the F-150 (97.6 in), Silverado and Sierra long bed (98.2 in), Tundra 8.1 ft (96.5 in), Super Duty, Ram heavy duty and GM heavy-duty long beds. In every shorter bed it hangs out the back on the tailgate.

Depth and volume

Depth is the inside height from the floor to the top of the bed rail. Volume is the maker’s own cubic-foot figure. To turn it into cubic yards — how mulch, gravel and topsoil are sold — divide by 27: a Silverado long bed holds 89.1 cu ft, about 3.3 cu yd level with the rails. That is space, not weight: a cubic yard of gravel weighs well over a ton, more than most half-ton trucks can carry, so check the payload on the door-jamb sticker first.

Where the numbers come from

Each row comes from the maker’s technical specifications or press kit where one was available. Where it wasn’t, the figure comes from pages that publish the maker’s data, and is only used when independent pages agree, or is labelled as a single source. Toyota doesn’t print bed volume, Ford doesn’t print the F-150’s floor width, and Ram doesn’t print volume for its heavy-duty beds — those cells are blank on purpose. The calculator shows the source for whichever truck you pick.

Questions

Will a 4x8 sheet of plywood fit in a truck bed?

Flat on the floor with the tailgate closed, only in an 8 ft bed on a full-size or heavy-duty truck, which has both the 96 in of length and more than 48 in between the wheel wells. In shorter full-size beds it lies between the wheel wells and rests on the open tailgate. In most midsize trucks it rides on top of the wheel wells.

How many cubic yards does a truck bed hold?

Divide the bed’s volume in cubic feet by 27. A full-size short bed holds about 2 cu yd level with the rails (Silverado 2.3), a long bed about 3 (Silverado 3.3), a midsize bed about 1.5. Heavy materials like gravel hit the payload limit long before the bed is full.
